Course Description: Accountancy 428 / CECS 401 is a newly designed course, being offered for the first time this semester as a graduate level elective taught jointly between the School of Accountancy (Dr. Vairam Arunachalam) and the Department of Computer Engineering and Computer Science (Dr. K. Palaniappan). The expected platforms include SAP R/3’s Business Information Warehouse (BW) and SGI’s Mineset. The use of BW permits enterprise-wide view of data and business-critical decisions in a variety of settings, and the use of Mineset permits the analysis and mining of such business-critical data. The objective of the course will be to provide the student with a basic level of theoretical and practical familiarity with the concepts and techniques of data warehousing and data mining using SAP R/3 BW and SGI’s Mineset.

Prerequisites: Graduate standing in business or computer science, and consent of instructor.

Course Textbooks (required):

1) The Data Warehouse Toolkit : Practical Techniques for Building Dimensional Data Warehouses, by Ralph Kimball, John Wiley & Sons, 1996. ISBN: 0471153370.

2) Data Mining Solutions: Methods and Tools for Solving Real-World Problems, by Christopher Westphal & Teresa Blaxton, John Wiley & Sons, 1998. ISBN: 0471253847.

3) Using SAP R/3 FI: Beyond Business Process Reengineering, by Ben W. Rockefeller, John Wiley & Sons, 1998. ISBN: 0471179965.

4) At discretion of instructor, other readings to be provided in class or placed on reserve at Ellis Library.

Course Material (recommended):

1) Solving Data Mining Problems through Pattern Recognition, by Ruby L. Kennedy, et al., Prentice Hall, 1997. ISBN 0-13-095083-1.

2) SAP R/3 System - A Client/Server Technology, Rudiger Buck-Emden & Jurgen Galimow, Addison-Wesley, Reprinted 1998., ISBN 0-201-40350-1.

Notes:

1) Statement on Academic Dishonesty. Academic honesty is fundamental to the activities and principles of a university. All members of the academic community must be confident that each person's work has been responsibly and honorably acquired, developed, and presented. Any effort to gain an advantage not given to all students is dishonest whether or not the effort is successful. The academic community regards academic dishonesty as an extremely serious matter, with serious consequences that range from probation to expulsion. When in doubt about plagiarism, paraphrasing, quoting, or collaboration, consult the course instructor.

2) Statement on ADA. If you have a disability and need classroom accommodations, it is your responsibility to notify me as soon as possible. Please see me privately after class. You are also required to register with Disability Services, AO38 Brady Commons, 882-4696, especially if you are requesting academic accommodations such as extended testing time.

Grading Criteria

Weight
Exam 1 20%
Exam 2 20%
Homework & Class Participation 20%
Final Group Project & Presentation 40%
Total 100%

Description:

Homework and Class Participation. There will be periodic assignments of homework that you will be required to complete. Homework will be assigned at the discretion of the instructors, and it is important that you complete them on time. You will also be expected to actively participate in all class discussions. You are also expected to complete any assigned readings and to participate in related class discussions. In other words, just showing up in class and keeping quiet will not be sufficient. In addition to discussion, you are also expected to display interest, preparedness, and a positive attitude toward the subject matter and approach in order to do well in class participation. Overall, any activity that contributes to learning, to a cooperative atmosphere, and to positive energy in the class will be considered toward class participation.

Exams. There will be two exams in this course: one at the end of Module I and one at the end of Module II. Both exams will consist of objective type questions, short problems or concepts. More details will be provided closer to the exam dates by the respective instructors.

Final Group Project and Presentation. Students will be assigned to do a capstone data mining semester project. This will be a group project, with each group consisting of 3-5 students. The project will involve the students’ execution of the following primary steps: select topic, build model, understand results, refine model, predict, and share model. Your group will be required to write a report and make an oral presentation of your work. More details on this project will be provided toward the the beginning of Module II.

Caution: Given the expansive nature of the topic, the newness of the course, and the very difficult nature of the SAP R/3 system, students may expect to be exposed to experimentation with a variety of pedagogical methods and must be very patient and accepting of rather high levels of frustration in order to get the most out of the course. Expecting to become masters of data warehousing, data mining, SAP R/3, BW, or Mineset within 15 weeks would be unrealistic. Instead, you should focus on acquiring a basic familiarity with the primary (theoretical and practical) dimensions of data warehousing and data mining using SAP R/3 BW and SGI’s Mineset — that we will be seeking to convey and to help you accomplish.
