The original model, created by Viewpoint, contained 180,000 polygons. The number was reduced first by eliminating blood vessels on the surface (~80,000 polygons), then using the polygon reduction capabilities of SOFTIMAGE. The surface blood vessels were replaced by TEXTURE MAPPING, which requires much less computing power. This resulted in approximately 27,000 polygons divided between the ten large models.
